Africa's smallholder farmers feed the continent, yet they work with inadequate tools and receive little support. BensonEdge changes this by putting the right tools in the right hands.
Africa's smallholder farmers are the backbone of the continent's food system. They produce approximately 80% of the food consumed in sub-Saharan Africa, yet they are among the poorest and most vulnerable people on the continent. They work incredibly hard — often from dawn to dusk — but with inadequate tools, poor seeds, and no access to markets, their efforts yield far less than they should.
BensonEdge's farmer support program is built on a simple but powerful conviction: when you give a hardworking farmer the right tools and knowledge, they will transform their own life and their community. We do not believe in creating dependency — we believe in removing the barriers that prevent talented, hardworking people from reaching their potential.
Our farmer support program provides smallholder farmers in remote locations with basic but essential farming tools — from hand tools like hoes, cutlasses, and watering cans, to more mechanized equipment like motorized tillers and water pumps. We also provide improved seeds, fertilizers, and crop protection products that dramatically increase yields.
Individual smallholder farmers are often at the mercy of exploitative middlemen who buy their produce at rock-bottom prices and sell it at enormous markups. They also lack the purchasing power to access quality inputs at reasonable prices. Farmer cooperatives solve both of these problems by giving smallholders collective bargaining power.
BensonEdge actively supports the formation and strengthening of farmer cooperatives in the communities where we work. We provide training in cooperative governance, financial management, and collective marketing. We help cooperatives access bulk purchasing arrangements for inputs, shared equipment, and direct market linkages that bypass exploitative intermediaries.
The results are remarkable. Farmers who join cooperatives typically see their income increase by 30-50% within the first year — not because they are working harder, but because they are working smarter and getting a fairer price for their labor.
Growing good food is only half the battle. Getting it to market at a fair price is equally important. BensonEdge works to create direct market linkages between our farmer partners and buyers — including supermarkets, food processors, institutional buyers (schools, hospitals, prisons), and export markets.
We also provide training in post-harvest handling, storage, and value addition — teaching farmers how to process and package their produce in ways that increase its value and shelf life. A farmer who sells fresh tomatoes gets one price; a farmer who sells sun-dried tomatoes or tomato paste gets a much higher price for the same raw material.
Our agricultural extension workers visit farmers regularly, providing ongoing technical support, monitoring crop health, and helping farmers troubleshoot problems before they become crises. This sustained support is what transforms a one-time intervention into a lasting change in farm productivity and income.
Tractors, tillers, and mechanized planters that dramatically reduce the physical labor of farming and increase the land area a family can cultivate.
High-quality, improved seed varieties along with fertilizers and crop protection products that significantly increase yields compared to traditional inputs.
